MISHAP IN BENUE: NIMASA DG MOVES TO ENGAGE STAKEHOLDERS ON SAFETY
Safety is Everybody’s Business – Jamoh
Worried by the increasing spate of boat accidents in Nigerian waters, The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Bashir Yusuf Jamoh has indicated his readiness to partner constructively with all relevant stakeholders as a move in the direction of improved and enhanced safety operations in the nation’s waters.
According to Jamoh, “This is one watery tragedy too many, especially within such a short period of time. In just 3 months, we have had boat mishaps in Bauchi, Lagos, and Benue. We shall not fold our arms and watch our waterways become a burial site. Safety is everybody’s business. We will reach out to partner regulators and work with the various stakeholders, including state and non-state actors in raising safety standards for the collective good of water transportation in Nigeria. This effort will be in keeping with a core mandate of NIMASA which is safety.
Jamoh who had earlier on Sunday called Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos to commiserate over the Ikorodu boat accident, also expressed the agency’s sympathies on the Benue incident. “Let me also extend my sincere sympathies to the government and people of Benue state over this sad development, especially the families who may be affected by this unfortunate development.”
