Boat accident: NIWA threatens to withdraw errant captains’ licences
Owing to the continued loss of lives on its inland waterways, the Lagos Area of the National Inland Waterways Authority has said it would deregister and withdraw the operational licences of reckless boat captains in to enforce sanity on Lagos waters.
In the last one month, multiple cases of boat accidents in the Lagos inland waterways has taken several lives.
The Lagos Area Manager of NIWA, Sarat Braimah, in a statement on Sunday, said the Federal Government regulatory agency would longer fold its arms, adding that it would do “all it takes to ensure zero boat accident.”
She was quoted saying, “We have tried to provide needed enabling environment for the operators, including training programmes, yet some have chosen the part of desperation and dangerous behaviour, leading to loss of lives and property.
“NIWA’s patience with unrepentant operators has been stretched thin and a new era of enforcement is sure to begin devoid of plea and forgiveness.
“Niwa will also prosecute and ensure the withdrawal of certificate of any boat captain including applying other stringent measures to force back sanity in the operation of water transport services in the state.”
Braimah said the month of August would herald more awareness for stakeholders in the sector.
